Registered Massage Therapy
Registered Massage Therapy (RMT) is a regulated healthcare profession focused on rehabilitation, pain relief, and restoring function through the manual assessment and treatment of soft tissues, joints, and the nervous system.
Unlike non-RMT relaxation spa massages, Registered Massage Therapy involves a clinical approach where therapists conduct detailed health history intakes, can perform orthopedic and range-of-motion assessments, and when necessary, can develop individualized treatment plans to address specific medical conditions such as chronic pain, sports injuries, and post-surgical recovery.
In Ontario, RMTs are licensed health professionals governed by a regulatory college, the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario.
To practice, they must complete a 2,200+ hour accredited education program, pass rigorous written and practical board exams, and maintain their registration through continuing education.
This regulation ensures they adhere to strict safety, ethical, and clinical standards, and their services are typically covered by extended health insurance providers.
Traditional Thai Massage
Traditional Thai massage is an ancient healing practice originating in Thailand over 2,500 years ago.
It combines acupressure, Indian Ayurvedic principles, and assisted yoga postures to balance the body’s energy flow along pathways called Sen lines.
Practitioners use their hands, elbows, knees, and feet to apply rhythmic pressure and guide the recipient through passive stretching and joint mobilization. Due to it’s extensive focus on stretching and gently improving flexibility, it’s very effective in positively impacting and improving the function and glide of the fascia-the tissue that surrounds and connects every tissue type in the human body- muscles, bones, organs, nerves and blood vessels.
The holistic approach of Thai Massage aims to relieve physical tension, improve flexibility, and promote energetic balance. Techniques of Thai Massage include compression, stretching, rocking, and reflexology on energy lines.
Culturally, it roots are Influenced by Buddhist teachings, Ayurveda, and traditional Chinese medicine. Thai Massage has been a health modality has spanning thousands of years.
Unfortunately, Thai Massage is not covered in extended health insurance plans under Massage Therapy.
Vibroacoustic Therapy (VAT)
Vibroacoustic therapy (VAT) is a non-invasive treatment that uses low-frequency sound vibrations (typically 30–120 Hz) delivered through embedded transducers in a specialized table to promote physical and mental well-being.
Developed in Norway in the 1980s by Olav Skille, it combines auditory soundscapes with tactile vibrations to stimulate the body’s nervous system, enhance circulation, and trigger the release of endorphins.
Key aspects of the therapy include:
- Mechanism: The vibrations penetrate deep into tissues and organs, leveraging the body’s high water content to facilitate cellular-level relaxation and pain relief.
- Benefits: It is used to alleviate chronic pain, reduce stress and anxiety, improve sleep quality, and manage pain and muscle tension.
- Application: Stand alone sessions last 30 minutes, during which the individual lies on the specialized table while listening to and feeling resonant therapeutic tones through the table. This service can be included in a Registered Massage Therapy or Thai Massage appointment at no extra charge.
- Regulatory Status: The FDA has approved vibroacoustic therapy for increasing circulation, pain relief, and mobility.
Red Light Therapy
Red light therapy, also known as photobiomodulation, is a non-invasive treatment that uses specific wavelengths of red (620–750 nm) and near-infrared light to penetrate the skin and stimulate cellular function.
It works by targeting mitochondria, the energy-producing organelles in cells, to increase ATP production, which enhances cell repair, reduces inflammation, and promotes tissue healing.
Common applications include:
- Skin rejuvenation: can benefit wrinkles and scars.
- Pain management: can reduce muscle pain, joint inflammation, and has shown benefit in wound healing.
- Wound healing: Facilitates tissue repair and recovery after surgery or procedures.
Crystal Sound Bowl Therapy
Crystal Sound Bowl Therapy is an immersive, meditative practice where participants lie down and are enveloped in soothing vibrations produced by singing bowls, and tuning forks.
Unlike traditional music, these sessions use resonant tones to help recipients release tension and enter a deep state of relaxation.
The practice aims to balance the body’s energy centres, known as chakras, and regulate the nervous system by activating the parasympathetic response.
This process can help lower stress hormones, reduce anxiety, and promote emotional healing by allowing the brain to shift into slower, more restful wave states. While generally safe, individuals with trauma, extreme sound sensitivity, or certain psychiatric conditions should consult a doctor before participating.
Crystal Sound Bowl Sessions last 30 minutes as a stand alone treatment, or can be included for shorter lengths within a massage or Thai Massage session.
Vibroacoustic Therapy (Vibration Table) can also be added to Crystal Sound Bowl Therapy for an immersive full body vibration from the bowls and the vibroacoustic bed.
